In the Omo Valley region of southern Ethiopia close to the border with South Sudan, live the Suri people. In the 21st century, their traditional way of life is threatened by progress and civil strife in the wider region; competition for land is fierce in the plains of south-western Ethiopia and armed raids are an everyday reality. In 2012, Sime Photo Travel Photographer Giordano Cipriani’s study of Ethiopia’s Suri Tribe won Grand Prize in Planet Magazine’s Global Travel Photo Contest. Cipriani’s reportage gives us an intimate and sensitive insight into a culture that reveres its cattle and practices lip piercing and beautification by painful ritual scarification.
